This is a seperate branch of Enraku-ji (Enryaku Temple) located on Mt. Hiei. Called Enentoku-in during the Edo period, it has changed its name several times, and it was not until the Meiji period that it was known as Sanzen-in (Sanzen Temple).
The principal image is of Amida Nyorai.
It is said that in 788, the Priest Enyubo began construction of this temple on Mt. Hiei at the foot of a pear tree.
Goraku-in (Goraku Hall) was the hermitage of Eshin Souzu's sister, Anyoni and was said to be built between the years 1143 and 1148 by Shinnyobo-ni to pray for the soul of her late husband.

Ojo Gokuraku-in was built with a shingled, half-hipped roof, and the statue of Amida (Amitabha) Sanzon is enshrined. From the Shinden (Throne Hall), you are able to see the Yusei-en garden, which along with Joheki-en garden were built in the early Edo period by Sowa Kanamori.
Formally called, Amidado Ojo Gokuraku-in (temple hall having an enshrined image of Amitabha), it was built in the 12th century and is now considered an important cultural asset.
The surrounding cedar trees and moss landscape are very well maintained.

Sanzen-in is one of the leading temples in Kyoto.
Within the grounds are many Cherry and Maple trees that were donated. Since 1989, many new building have been constructed including Konjikifudou-do, Kannon-do and new dry landscape gardens. Presently, the Homotsu-kan (Treasure Hall) is under construction.
