This is in the vicinity of the gates of Kamigamo-jinjya (Kamigamo Shrine), along the Myojin-gawa (Myojin River).
This was the original area where the priests of Kamigamo Shrine used to lived - even now 30 such buildings are present. The general area has been designated by the government as a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
During the Heian Period, a Kamigamo Shrine Shinto Priest designed the Japanese Garden that is still present inside the famous Nishimura House.
